CHOICE 1980-2000s      During the time of the 1980s we have now reached an era where education reached unprecedented levels. Majority of the school-age-population was enrolled in school, 71% of students were graduating highschool, and even furthering themselves to college. I believe the role of  politicians and the publicity of education changed school into what they are presently in the United states. With the worry now being the economy was facing competition due to the lack of Americans achieving global goals, education was at a “potential crisis”. The federal government felt there needed to be more involved  elsewhere which allowed education and its burden to be shifted in the hands of state and local authority. Giving hope that school would improve and public education will have a brighter future.       However this was not the case for America's schooling system. Competition was introduced into systems as a strategy to experiment branch off from the traditions. First came cho

1900-1950s  PROGRESSIVE        By the time of the early 1 900s the United States was moving into more of an urbanized way of living. While public schools were spreading across the country, there was a peak flood of immigrants from all over the globe. Public schooling “was the place where the American dream was nurtured and the future itself took shape.” (Benard et al.2001) . By the time of the mid 1900s more than 3 million children w ere enrolled in public elementary, with 80% of teenagers were enroll into high schools. American s was proud to display the works of the progressive curriculum around the world. Some would say the progressive movement of educ

Together but Divided      Education is an important part of today's America and the survival of a democracy. To understand how American education has developed into what it is today you have to go back. In the early 1700s only the wealthy  had the opportunity to go to public schools to obtain the skills and literacy at the serious level as they were substantial in the continuation of the citizens and workers of America. While in the much lower incomes there was “charity school’’ available that was paid by the local dollars of the community sometime in exchange for crops from the farm. The downside was that the schools were taught their way; the teachers only mainly taught religion, writing, and reading. Something that later became controversial.  It wasn’t until Thomas Jefferson decided that public schooling should be open for equal opportunity. Jefferson's idea of creating an education was ridiculed when it came to farmers wanting to achieve higher education, and Jefferso

Hello everyone, My name is Lamya Young, a current senior at New Jersey City University. As well as being a full-time student I am also a student athlete for the track and field team. I am academically studying and majoring in biology as I am mainly interested in the human body and the way it works. However when I first attended NJCU for my first semester I was undecided for I was completely lost and confused on how I wanted to expand my education. Growing up I struggled with reading and writing. I was behind and frustrated because I couldn’t read chapter books like the rest of my class. My mom saw my struggle and gave my brother and I extra academic assignments to do such as flashcards with words and definitions, quizzes, and book summary assignments. Long nights were spent at the kitchen table and television was not just something I could do randomly, it was now a reward. Then every so often my mother would quiz my brother and I on our progress to make sure we were retaining the inf
