school choice
CHOICE 1980-2000s
During the time of the 1980s we have now reached an era where education reached unprecedented levels. Majority of the school-age-population was enrolled in school, 71% of students were graduating highschool, and even furthering themselves to college. I believe the role of politicians and the publicity of education changed school into what they are presently in the United states. With the worry now being the economy was facing competition due to the lack of Americans achieving global goals, education was at a “potential crisis”. The federal government felt there needed to be more involved elsewhere which allowed education and its burden to be shifted in the hands of state and local authority. Giving hope that school would improve and public education will have a brighter future.
However this was not the case for America's schooling system. Competition was introduced into systems as a strategy to experiment branch off from the traditions. First came choice, choice was given to students so they can have the ability to choose the school they wanted to go to in order to make schooling less “boring”. Vouchers were given out to challenge public schools and give students change to a private schooling. Voucher was a trending matter as many thought that giving money to students lacked money in finding a private school. But ultimately choice gave equal opportunity to the poor. We all knew Poor didn't have the same opportunities as the rich.Charter schools were introduced to bring in more structure and tradition. Untimely change happened a lot during the 1980 to present within the school system.
I was a school choice student as I was fortunate enough to be part of a program that allowed me to go to school outside my district. I lived in an era many might consider poor and lacking of education, and my mom went out her way to seek an equal opportunity for her children. School choice changed my life and I do agree with it, however I just wish more people saw it as a positive rather than a negative.
